New Website

Dear Blogger:

Not only am a moving to a new publishing service, but I am using your bandwidth to host its advertisement (at least till I can get some links changed). Seriously Blogger, its not you. Its me. Whoever you end up with is going to be a really lucky guy/girl. I mean that. Check in with me at time to time at:

Your Friend Always,

Rat Bastard 1L

I am a Moron

I figured there is no better way to break the ice at the new law school then by introducing yourself via some self-deprecation while trying to sell a Civ Pro book you bought twice. From a facebook post I made on my incoming 1L class' message board:

OK so I'm a moron and I suppose that is as good of a personal introduction as any for my soon-to-be law school peers.

In my infinite wisdom, I have accidentally ordered 2 copies of the Civil Procedure for Professor X's 3:40-4:30 MTRF class. (Friedenthal, Miller, Sexton & Heushkoff) Amazon.com's shopping cart is filled with trickery and deceit, as I apparently I felt quite alright with the number "2" next to my order on the checkout screen.

That said, I have a brand spanking new book here for a loving home. Since it came through a sub-contracted vendor, Amazon will not take it back. While it cost me around $120, I am willing to let it go for less. Send me a message or email with offers.

ALSO: While I doubled up on this particular casebook, Amazon did not have the Criminal Law book I need for Professor's class, 11:15-12:25 MWF. ( Criminal Law: Cases, Statutes, and Lawyering Skills Author: Crump, et al. )

If anyone has yet to purchase books and would feel so inclined, I'd gladly trade my ridiculously heavy Civ Pro casebook for your ridiculously heavy Criminal Law casebook. Shoot me an e-mail and we can exchange cell numbers and make one another offers we can't refuse.

OK for now. If success in Law School is all about attention to details, then I'm off to a wonderful start... Hope to hear from you!

Orientation Materials

Like many soon-to-be law students all over the country, I have received my orientation package. By the way, out of curiosity, have many law schools simply forgone the printed page? I just received a PDF file and I suppose such is rather 21st Century. But damn it, I am paying a lot for law school. Would it be too much to ask for them to get off their ass and mail me something?

Its pretty standard material: A Case to Brief, How to Read a Case, How to Brief a Case, etc... At this point, those going to law school have either read about how to do this already or have had to put up with this in undergrad (albeit, nowhere near the same capacity required in law school). The truth is if you cannot distill information at this part of the game then you are in trouble. Anyone, it seems to me, should be able to figure out the facts of the case. Start at the beginning of the case. Read it (left to right, sound it out) and tell me what the hell happened in it. Forget the fancy legal analysis or issue or holding for the moment. Law school--while expecting your briefs to contain these parts from the beginning--ought to teach you how to find that sort of stuff better/faster/give you a greater appreciation for holdings and issues.

But honestly, not knowing how to find the facts of the case? These how to read/brief a case materials have spent an inordinate amount of time on explaining the process through which a student must approach, consider and record the facts. Really? You need help with that? Here, I'll keep it simple:

Just tell me what happened. I assume that having applied to law school, been accepted and every other hoop soon-to-be 1Ls have gone through in this economy and admissions cycle, then you know how to READ!

Restless

Having just finished my last day of work and facing a week and a half-long scramble to get packed for law school, I find myself with an odd moment to myself. I have plenty to do: inventory kitchenware, look for used couches on Craigslist, petition (read: beg) fellow 1L bloggers to add me to their links bar, figure out how the hell to use blogger properly i.e. implement some sort of page viewer, return the 2nd civ pro book I bought to Amazon b/c I am a dumbass, rent a U-haul, etc...

What am I choosing to do on one of my last free nights for quite some time? Yup. That's right. Go kill a 6-pack and play some Call of Duty.
